Oba Ladoja poised for new Olubadan of Ibadanland as royal drummers move to ex-gov’s home
In the wake of the passing of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, preparations are underway for the ascension of Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja to the coveted throne. Royal drummers have relocated to Ladoja’s Bodija home in anticipation of his installation.
As the current Otun Olubadan, Ladoja’s rise has been expected due to the unique succession system that governs Ibadan.
Ladoja, a notable traditional leader and former Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2006, has garnered respect throughout the community for his dedication to cultural preservation and unity.
“His extensive experience and commitment to our heritage make him a strong candidate for the throne,” remarked a close associate of Ladoja. Born on September 25, 1944, Ladoja’s illustrious career positions him well for leadership, particularly in the realm of traditional governance.
The official process for his ascension entails a confirmation by the Olubadan-in-Council and approval from the Oyo State Government, followed by a coronation ceremony. “This structured approach ensures stability and minimizes disputes, allowing for a smooth transfer of power,” explained a member of the council.
During his time as Otun Olubadan, Ladoja has played a crucial role within the Olubadan-in-Council, showcasing his leadership qualities and dedication to the traditional institution. His experience as the former governor of Oyo State adds a valuable perspective that could enrich the traditional leadership.
If Ladoja ascends as expected, the Balogun line will take the throne after his reign, continuing the established alternating pattern in Ibadan’s monarchy. This system has proven effective over the years, ensuring equitable distribution of power and opportunities for every royal line.
As the community prepares for this significant event, the Oyo State government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, will play a critical role in confirming Ladoja’s ascension and facilitating a dignified transition.
“Oba Ladoja is certainly positioned to lead Ibadanland into a new and promising era,” a local elder noted. The installation ceremony is anticipated to be a momentous occasion, steeped in tradition and respect for the cultural heritage of Ibadanland.
