No place for indiscriminate dumping of refuse, Kwara govt insists
The Kwara State Government, through the Ministry of Environment, has urged Waste Management Consultants to be proactive in discharging their duties to the public to curb cholera and other infections through indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
The state Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, gave the charge in Ilorin over the weekend while inspecting their operational vehicles at the Ministry’s premises, GRA, Ilorin, the state capital, to ascertain its efficiency and durability.
According to her, the government will not treat the issue of indiscriminate dumping of refuse with kid gloves, adding that the state cannot shy away from its civic responsibilities and allow epidemics to take over the state.
Buge, while advising the waste consultants to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy to serve residents within the state efficiently, added that the government would continue to do its best to eradicate indiscriminate dumping of refuse to sustain a healthy environment across the state.
The commissioner, while reiterating Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s commitment to eradicating indiscriminate dumping of refuse, pointed out that an Ilorin Magistrate Court on Saturday, August 17, 2024, sentenced another 14 persons to a 3-month jail term for violating Kwara State Environmental Law, making a total number of convicted persons within one week 75.
The Commissioner, however, expressed satisfaction at the level of compliance across the nooks and crannies of the metropolis, imploring members of the public to always abide by the state sanitation laws, to support the government, to curb illegal dumping of refuse, road encroachment and scavenging within the metropolis, to ensure and sustain a clean and hygienic environment, for the betterment of every citizen of the state.
In his remark, the Chairman of the Association of Waste Consultants, Alhaji ZakariyahuTahir, commended the Commissioner for taking bold steps to stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse to sustain a clean and safe environment, for a healthy living while assuring the state government of their support at all times to maintain a hygienic environment.
