NLC threatens strike, gives FG seven-day ultimatum to resolve PENCOM leadership crisis
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has set a seven-day ultimatum for the Federal Government due to its failure to constitute the governing board of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM).
NLC also raised concerns about the government’s alleged diversion of workers’ funds through the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).
In a communiqué signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the Central Working Committee convened on August 13, 2025, to discuss pressing issues concerning Nigerian workers and the broader trade union movement. The meeting addressed the leadership crisis within the Edo State Council of the NLC and highlighted alarming developments concerning the NSITF.
The communiqué expressed outrage at what it termed the government’s assault on workers’ social protection rights, particularly the diversion of 40% of workers’ contributions into the national coffers, which it described as a violation of NSITF statutes.
Ajaero stated, “Equally condemnable is the new administration’s false claim of ownership of the NLC National Headquarters… These actions represent a direct attack on workers’ rights and the principle of tripartite governance.”
In demanding action, the NLC called for the NSITF to account for and return all diverted funds within seven working days and reiterated the need for the PENCOM board to be properly constituted within the same timeframe. Furthermore, the Pension Commission was asked to provide a full status report of the funds.
“If at the end of these seven working days, nothing is done, the NLC will no longer guarantee industrial peace in the sector,” Ajaero warned.
