Nigeria’s police rescue 5-month-old baby sold by mother for N500,000

ABAKALIKI, Nigeria (The Informant247) – Police in Nigeria’s Ebonyi state rescued a 5-month-old baby who was sold by his mother in order to be trafficked, police said in a statement on Monday.

The baby, who was sold for half-a-million naira, was rescued by authorities on September 14.

The mother “put to bed in April 2022 but a few days after, she sold the child to Elechi Ann Elechi, the owner of a local Maternity Home and native of Ezi Okpani, Evuma Village in Afikpo North LGA,” state police spokesperson Chris Anyanwu said in a statement, adding that the baby had been reunited with his 20-year-mother, Ola Echegbu.

He said Elechi had been arrested and would be charged with child-trafficking.

The mother of the baby, speaking to reporters said she sold the child out of frustration.
