Denis Idahosa, the member representing Ovia Federal Constituency in Edo State, has called for the abolition of the Nigerian Senate.
The member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has suggested that the country should adopt unicameral legislature to reduce cost or expenses of governance.
Unicameral legislature is said to be adopted in a country where one single chamber or house makes law and performs other legislative functions as postulated by the law.
The legislator made this revelation during an interview with newsmen in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The parliamentarian confessed that the Red Chamber needs to be scrapped if the country is truly ready reduce expenses of governance.
The APC political actor said the upper legislative house needs to be scrapped because the House of Representatives performs most of the legislative jobs in the country.
He said the resources of the country ate limited and therefore have to be managed.
The Edo lawmaker also stated that funding two legislative houses at the federal level is not “a smart thing”.
“If we are going to cut our spending, I think one of the houses should be scrapped, which I suggest should be Senate.
“We only sit three times in a week. We are being paid salaries to work for Nigerians; we can extend the three days to five days, while we have one house taking care of both jobs.
“So I think to reduce the unnecessary spending that we are actually involved in, the best thing to do is to reduce it to one for more accountability”, he said.
