Nigerian Army detains female soldier over theft allegations

The Nigerian Army (NA) has confirmed the detention of Corporal Amina Maidoki, a female soldier, following allegations related to theft and misconduct.

In a statement released by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt-Col Appolonia Anele, the Army emphasized that Maidoki is currently under investigation for “conduct inconsistent with the core values of the Nigerian Army,” which includes the allegations of theft.

“As a professional military institution, the NA is guided by extant provisions of the Armed Forces Act (Cap A20 LFN 2004), internal regulations, and the highest standards of military ethics,” the statement read. The Army clarified that her temporary detention aligns with lawful procedures established for service personnel.

The statement further reassured that disciplinary measures within the Nigerian Army are not arbitrary, asserting, “They are governed by due process, and all personnel are entitled to procedural fairness.” The ongoing investigation is reportedly being conducted with full respect for Maidoki’s legal and human rights, and she continues to receive appropriate welfare according to military standards.

The Army strongly denied any claims of unlawful detention or denial of legal representation, stating, “All such claims are false and are rendered simply to mislead the public and draw undue sentiments.” The organization urged the public to disregard any speculative commentary on the matter.

Acknowledging the concerns of Corporal Maidoki’s family, the Army reiterated its commitment to lawful communication and engagement, as long as such interactions comply with the operational and investigative procedures currently in effect.

“The Nigerian Army ensures that the rights of all accused are respected irrespective of the persons involved,” the statement concluded. It emphasized that while all allegations of misconduct must be thoroughly addressed, no individual is above the law or exempt from military discipline to maintain the integrity and effectiveness of the Army.
