Nigeria has 775 terror convictions, remains only country with working democracy in entire Sahel — Ribadu

National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, says Nigeria has secured 775 terrorism-related convictions, insisting that the country remains the only functioning democracy in the entire Sahel region despite persistent security challenges.

Ribadu spoke on Thursday at a dialogue on a whole-of-society approach to preventing violence and conflict in Northern Nigeria. The event was organised by the National Peace Committee, The Kukah Centre, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Abuja.

He said each conviction represents progress in stabilising communities affected by violent extremism, noting that the achievements were possible because government institutions, security agencies, the judiciary and communities worked together.

“Each conviction represents not just a statistic, but a life restored and a community stabilised,” Ribadu said.

The NSA, however, warned against complacency, stressing that discussions must translate into concrete actions that strengthen resilience, rebuild trust and enhance security across the North and beyond.

Ribadu also issued a firm warning to individuals or groups attempting to exploit communities or spread terror, saying they would face coordinated and decisive action by the state.

“Let me be clear: the Nigerian state remains fully committed to law, order, and the protection of citizens. Anyone—individual or group—who exploits communities, spreads terror or attempts to undermine national unity will face coordinated and decisive action,” he stated.

He emphasised that Nigeria’s democratic resilience sets it apart in the Sahel, where several countries have experienced military coups in recent years.

“Nigeria remains the only functioning democracy in the entire Sahel, and we must protect that achievement. We will defeat terror. We will restore order. We will not give up, and we will not surrender,” Ribadu said.

He noted that national security challenges often originate at the local level, adding that religious leaders, traditional rulers, communities, local government authorities and state governments have critical roles to play in preventing violence before it escalates.

Ribadu praised the sacrifices of security personnel and urged Nigerians to support ongoing efforts.

“Nigeria desires peace. Our people deserve peace. And together, with sincerity and shared responsibility, we can build the stable, prosperous and united society we all long for,” he added.
