The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Sunday began their AFCON 2023 campaign on a lacklustre note after playing a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea.
The three times AFCON Champions were subjected to an early scare when Iban Salvador, against the run of play exquisitely netted the opener for the 1.6 million populated country in the 36th minutes of the game.
The Super Eagles would later rally round quickly and were lucky to have Victor Osimhen headed home an equaliser in the 37the minutes.
Nigeria would go on to dominate the game but a seeming lack of team work and clinical finish denied the Jose Paseiro led side the ultimate points.
Osimhen was also close to getting a brace and a supposed winner for the team in the 76th minutes but was unlucky to have his effort hit off the goalpost a bit wide.
Eagles are now third on the log with just one point, behind Equatorial Guinea and Cote D’Ivoire who has three points.
Nigeria will have an uphill task to deal with when they face host nation, Ivory Coast, on Thursday, 18th January, and later wrap up their group’s game against Guinea Bissau on Monday, January 22nd.
