Niger Floods: Community holds fidau prayer for victims

Barely ten days after the devastating flood disaster that struck in Mokwa, Niger State, the community on Saturday, June 7, 2025, held a fidau prayer in honour of the deceased.

The people of Mokwa on Thursday, May 29 woke up to a torrential rain which unleashed a flash flood that would eventually went on to claim over 200 lives, destroy houses and displaced thousands.

The fidau prayer, according to a local news medium, Tswangi TV was led by the Chief Imam of Mokwa, Mohammed Ibn Mohammed at the Mokwa central mosque.

Traditional chiefs, hundreds of residents, religious leaders, and sympathisers gathered to offer prayers for the souls of those who perished in the tragic flooding incident.

Similarly, Prayers were also said for survivors of the disaster, as well as for continued peace, unity, and divine protection to prevent future tragedies in the area.

Meanwhile, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has disclosed that the cause of the flood is largely attributable to climate change and deforestation.

According to NSEMA, no fewer than 3,018 people are displaced by the floods that also left three bridges destroyed.

The Niger state has responded to the disaster with series of interventions,including provision of critical support and relief materials for victims.

The Federal government has also approved the release of the sum of N2 billion for the resettlement of the victims, among other humanitarian assistance.

Unicef has also set up a temporary IDP camp for the survivors of the flood, even as most of them still continues to grapple with the traumatic experience ocassioned by the lost of their loved ones and properties.
