Calabar: Newly posted NDLEA commander found dead in hotel room

The Cross River State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Morrison Ogbonna, was on Thursday morning found dead in a hotel in Calabar.

According to reports by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ogbonna was discovered lifeless in his hotel room by officers who had arrived to pick him up for a scheduled assignment.

A source who pleaded anonymity explained that when repeated knocks on his door went unanswered, the officers alerted the hotel management. Upon opening the room, they found the commander dead.

Ogbonna, who assumed duty in Cross River in August following his transfer to replace Rachel Umebuali, had only recently taken charge of the command.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Cross River State Police Command, SP Irene

Ugbo-Obase, said: “I can confirm to you that it is true, but what led to the death is what I can’t readily tell you.”

Authorities have yet to disclose the cause of death.
