More accidents recorded on good roads than bad ones: FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps, on Tuesday, said more accidents have been recorded on good roads than the bad ones, The Informant247 reports.

The Corps’ Head of Operations in Kwara State, Commandant Lucas Oguntade, stated this at a meeting with the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

He raised alarm over the rising cases of accidents in the state which he attributed to reckless driving.

He explained that Kwara has witnessed more accidents in the past few days of fuel scarcity, mostly caused by commercial drivers, also transporting fuel and humans in the same vehicle is rampant among motorists, putting lives at risk.

“There is barely a day that there won’t be a record of the accident, especially since fuel has been scarce and we have seen that it occurs among commercial drivers most,” he said.

He added that statistics show that road accidents recorded is as a result of overspeeding and overloading of vehicles, adding that the commission is working tirelessly to bring down the spate of road crashes.

He said, “The major cause of accidents is over speeding, what we do is advocacy we go to churches, mosques, public offices, and social gathering to sensitize people on the dangers of speeding, apart from that we also do free safety checks, the commission is trying to curb the speed to a reasonable level.”

For his part, the NURTW State Vice Chairman, Ahmed Babatunde, said the union organizes sensitization for their members monthly on traffic laws.
