Modibbo Kawu urges journalists to prioritize ethics, reject political favoritism
Former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, has called on journalists to uphold ethical standards and resist political favoritism in their practice.
He made the remarks during an Iftar gathering with members of the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) at his residence in GRA, Ilorin.
Dr. Kawu criticized the growing trend of media organizations giving awards to politicians, describing it as a joke that undermines journalistic integrity.
He recalled his tenure as Editor at Daily Trust Newspaper, emphasizing that he never supported such practices because they compromise the credibility of media houses.
“Instead of awarding politicians, Daily Trust focused on recognizing professionals making real impact,” he stated, citing the example of a doctor in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, who dedicated his life to helping victims of sexual violence.
He also stressed the importance of unity among journalists, urging them to see each other as collaborators rather than competitors.
“Division among media professionals weakens the industry. We must work together to maintain credibility and professionalism,” he added.
On social media regulation, Dr. Kawu strongly opposed any proposed legislation seeking to control digital platforms, arguing that such moves contradict Nigeria’s constitutional rights to freedom of expression.
However, he urged online journalists to maintain ethical reporting and avoid misinformation.
He further emphasized the need for continuous training and capacity building for journalists, especially in the digital space, to ensure they adapt to the evolving media landscape.
In his closing remarks, ASKOMP Chairman and The Informant247 Publisher, Mr. Salihu Shola Taofeek, thanked Dr. Kawu for his commitment to journalism and prayed for his continued strength and success.
