Messi wins FIFA best player award
Lionel Messi on Monday night was named the FIFA player of the year in a well attended ceremony which was held in Paris, France.
Messi who was instrumental to Argentina’s triumph at the World cup was voted ahead of his PSG mate, Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid star, Karim Benzema.
Messi won the award for the record number of seven times in the last 14 editions.
Meanwhile, the best women’s player was won by Spain’s Alexia Putellas for a second straight year.
Argentina also won big as coach Lionel Scaloni was voted FIFA men’s coach of the year while the best men’s goalkeeper was Emiliano Martínez.
The women’s coach award was won by Sarina Wiegman, who led the England to the title at the Women’s European Championship. The women’s goalkeeper award was given to Euro winner Mary Earps of England.
