Man dragged to court for beating up police officer in Lagos

A 23-year-old man, Lookman Ashikpa, who allegedly assaulted a police officer on duty on Wednesday appeared at an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Ashikpa, whose residential address was not given, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawfully causing of inconvenience, and assault.

The prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offences on April 11, at 8.20 a.m., at Guaranty Trust Bank, Ikotun, Lagos.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant assaulted a police officer, one Insp. Namdom Miri, who was on duty at Guaranty Trust Bank.

“The defendant gave the police officer a blow on his left eye which caused him bodily harm.

“The actions of the defendant unlawfully caused inconveniences to the police officers on duty at the bank and the staff of the bank,” Aigbokhan said.

He said the offences contravened Sections 157, 174(b) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs K. A. Ariyo, granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ariyo ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and one of the sureties must be a blood relative to the defendant.

She adjourned the case until April 21 for mention.
