Labour unions call on Governor-elect, Oyebanji to pay emergency salaries, arrears
Ekiti State University workers under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee have informed Mr Biodun Oyebanji, the Governor-elect of Ekiti State, to announce a state of emergency on the payment of their salaries and arrears.
The workers said the appeal is to protect their families and relations from hunger and suffering.
The chairmen of the three Unions, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, SSANU, Azeez Aguda, National Association of Academic Technologists NAAT, Mary Adeosun and Non-Academic Staff Union NASU, Sunday Olajutemu, in a statement revealed that the workers lamented that the situation requires urgent action.
The Union leaders have said that the union members have suspended an industrial action, with the hope that the government would fulfill its promise but not was to show for it.
The statement noted that the institution is financially handicapped and has been unable to fulfill its righteous obligations to members of the union since the state government has not fulfilled its promise of remitting the total of seven months of subvention to the institution.
The union chairmen also explained that the institution is currently swimming in debt of over ₦11 billion, as the institution needs urgent intervention of the governor elect.
