Kwara to capture transporters’ data for security, policy planning
The Kwara State Government has announced plans to begin capturing data of transport operators across the state as part of efforts to enhance security, improve transparency, and strengthen policy planning in the sector.
The initiative, scheduled to commence on September 22 and 29, 2025, will cover designated points in all 16 local government areas of the state.
Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Lafia Aliyu Kora-Sabi, disclosed this during a consultative meeting with transport union leaders on Wednesday at the ministry’s headquarters in Ilorin.
He explained that the exercise would complement the Kwara State Residential Registration Programme and fully integrate the transport sector into the scheme.
“The data capture will not only aid security agencies in identifying operators but also serve as a vital tool for policy planning and improved service delivery in the transport sector,” the commissioner said.
According to him, enumeration points will include motor parks, union offices, and local government secretariats across Kwara Central, South, and North senatorial districts.
He assured that the process would be free of charge and urged union leaders to mobilize their members for maximum cooperation.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Salau Kabiru Abdullahi, commended the unions for their continuous support and collaboration with the government, stressing that their input has shaped many successful initiatives in the transport sector.
On their part, leaders of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Alhaji Abdulrahman Olayinka Onikijipa, and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Abdulrazaq Ariwoola, welcomed the exercise but appealed to the government to prioritize the renovation of state-owned motor parks, many of which they described as dilapidated and unattractive to passengers.
They also praised the ministry for its inclusiveness and engagement of stakeholders before implementing new policies, noting that such collaboration fosters trust between the government and unions.
