Kwara seeks to end cyber crimes,other vices among students

Kwara State government is determined to rid the state off crimes and criminalities that are prevalent among the students populace.

The government demonstrated its commitment to building an abiding students community by organising a stakeholders dialogue in other to tackle the scourge.

The Stakeholders dialogue which was held on Tuesday, June 11, was aimed at addressing the prevailing issues around Cyber Crime, Cultism, Drugs Abuse, and other social vices among students across tertiary institutions in the state.

The initiative, themed “Stemming The Tide of Social Vices Among Students: A Panacea For Positive Growth”, was organized by the office of the Special Assistant on student’s affairs to the Kwara State Governor, Salami Wasiu Onidugbe, and facilitated by the State Government under the leadership of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, Kwara Banquet Hall.

The program which drew critical stakeholders across the state together provided avenue to diagnose the root causes of the social vices and also proffer a sustainable solutions to it.

It also featured keynote address from Prof Mary Fajonyomi, panel discussion and questions and answers from the participants.

Some of the panelists include, Kwara Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya; Representative of Ilorin Zonal Head of EFCC Chinedu Ozugha, representative of the Governor and Commissioner for Tertiary Education Dr Mary, Titilope Anifowoshe and Sheriff Gold.

However, in an exclusive interview with The Informant247, the Special Assistant on student’s affairs to the Governor, Onidugbe revealed that the purpose of the stakeholders dialogue was to discuss and tackle the pervasive issues of cybercrime, drug abuse, cultism, sexual abuse, and other social immoralities threatening the well-being and future of the students.

He said, “The rationale behind this dialogue is to raise awareness about the severity of these issues, share experiences and expertise, collaborate on effective strategies and solutions, and also to empower students to make informed choices”.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the event, he stated “What inspired this initiative is to ensure our tertiary institutions is a safe havens for learning, growth, and character development. Unfortunately, these social immoralities undermine our efforts and put students’ lives at risk. As such, we must join forces to protect our students and ensure their success.

Onidugbe expressed overwhelming excitement at the massive turnout of students and Stakeholders from different institutions.

“I’m overwhelmed with the turnout of our students. The hall couldn’t even contain the students. I am very impressed with the massive turnout”, he said.

He, however urged students to desist from social vices, saying the later will add no value to their lives but rather destroy it.

He said “My advise to students who perpetrate this menace is to look beyond today, they are the future leaders and change-makers of tomorrow. Social vices will not add any value to their lives rather destroy it. As such, I implore them to abstain from it”.

The program also comes in handy at a critical time when majority of youths across the country are needed to be mobilized for nation building and steered away from the uncertainty that has been occasioned by involvement in these vices.
