Kwara SDP downplays Hakeem Lawal’s exit, says party remains stronger

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kwara State has dismissed concerns over the resignation of its 2023 governorship candidate, Hakeem Lawal, insisting that the development poses no threat to the party’s strength, structure, or ideological direction.

In a statement jointly signed by the party’s state Chairman, Barrister Ibrahim Sharafdeen, and the Secretary, Ibrahim Olamilekan Quadri, the SDP described Lawal’s exit as an exercise of his constitutional right to freedom of association rather than a setback for the party.

The party leadership maintained that the SDP remains firmly rooted in social-democratic principles and people-oriented governance, stressing that it is not built around the ambition of any single individual.

According to the statement, the departure of members who no longer align with the party’s ideology helps to further clarify the SDP’s identity as a mass movement for ordinary citizens.

“The SDP is anchored on the mandate of market women, farmers, teachers, artisans, and youths across Kwara State,” the statement read, adding that the party’s relevance and resolve are derived from grassroots support rather than political elites.

The leadership further argued that those exiting the party had, over time, shown a disconnect from its core ideology, a factor it said contributed to the party’s challenges during the 2023 general elections. Their departure, the SDP noted, would allow for renewed focus on committed members and stronger ideological cohesion.

Reaffirming its respect for individuals’ rights to join or leave any political party, the SDP wished the departing members well in their future political engagements.

However, it emphasized that the party is undergoing an internal rebuilding process aimed at strengthening its grassroots structures and ensuring ideological discipline.

The Kwara SDP urged its members and supporters to disregard any suggestion of instability, describing the current moment as a “new dawn” for a more united and determined party.

The party further reiterated its commitment to presenting a credible alternative to the ruling party and continuing its struggle for inclusive governance that prioritises the interests of ordinary Kwarans.

The Informant247 reports that Hakeem Lawal announced his official resignation from the party on Wednesday, with strong indications pointing to his return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
