Kwara restaurants warned against discharging wastewater into public drains

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has issued a stern warning to restaurants and food vendors across the State to immediately cease the illegal discharge of wastewater into public drainage systems, highlighting the severe risks this poses to public health and environmental safety.

This warning was issued by KWEPA’s General Manager, Hon. Jide Aina, during an inspection tour of major restaurants in the Ilorin metropolis. The Agency’s task force discovered numerous establishments improperly discharging effluent water into open drains, resulting in environmental damage and unpleasant odors affecting nearby communities.

Aina emphasized the necessity for food service establishments to implement proper environmental practices, stating that they are required to install wastewater management systems, such as soakaways or retention tanks. He also noted that any wastewater released into the environment must be treated with approved chemicals.

“This practice is not only irresponsible but illegal. Any establishment found flouting environmental regulations will face strict sanctions,” Aina asserted.

He, however, urged residents to support KWEPA’s initiatives by reporting any environmental violations in their areas. Reports can be made through the KWEPA Whistleblower Number. 09114707577
