Kwara NUJ congress dissolves credentials committee over alleged irregularities

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kwara State Council has dissolved its Credentials Screening Committee amid allegations of compromise and procedural irregularities.

The decision was made during an emergency congress held at the NUJ Press Centre in Ilorin on Friday.

Originally scheduled to be held in the Conference Hall, the meeting took place in an open space within the premises after the hall was found to be under lock and key.

The emergency congress saw significant attendance from members across various chapels, demonstrating the urgency and importance of the issues at hand.

Mallam Abdulhakeem Garba, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, chaired the congress in the absence of Council Chairman Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed and other State Working Committee (SWC) members, who failed to attend despite calls for the emergency meeting.

The Kwara State Council Executive Council (SEC) had earlier called for the congress to address critical issues and ensure a transparent election process for the forthcoming 2024 Kwara NUJ Elections.

However, the state chairman of the council, Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed, in a telephone conversation with The Informant247, described the dissolution as false.

He said, “I did not want to say anything on the issue before, but I later reconsidered after seeing the need to.

“No committee has been dissolved, and the allegedly dissolved committee is still very much functioning.

“The actions and conduct of the union are being strictly guided by law. Any member of the union who joined in the action will face severe consequences.”
