Kwara Comrades mourn slain Nursing student leader, demands govt action on insecurity

The National Association of Nigeria Comrades (NANC), Kwara Axis, has condoled with the students of the Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences (KWASCONS), the Student Union Government (SUG), and the wider Nigerian student community in the state over the killing of a final-year Midwifery student, Senator Salihu Bio Khalid.

Senator Khalid, who was a former President of the KWASCONS Student Union Government, was reportedly killed alongside his brother during a bandit attack late on Tuesday night, an incident that has thrown the institution and student community in Kwara State into deep mourning.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its State Chairman, Comrade Babatunde Muhammad Jamiu, and Vice Chairman (Academic), Comrade Ahmed Ridwan Ayinde, and made public through the Public Relations Officer, Comrade Taofeeq Islamiyah Opeyemi, NANC described the incident as tragic and deeply painful.

The association described the deceased as a committed and fearless student leader whose passion for student welfare, unionism, and service left a lasting mark on KWASCONS and the broader student movement in the state.

“NANC Kwara Axis extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, the leadership of the Student Union Government, and the entire students of KWASCONS over this irreparable loss,” the statement read. “We pray that Almighty God grants the departed eternal rest and gives the bereaved the fortitude to bear this painful loss.”

NANC further strongly condemned the growing wave of insecurity across Kwara State, noting that the continuous loss of innocent lives to banditry and violent attacks is unacceptable.

The association called on the Kwara State Government and relevant security agencies to urgently strengthen security around student-populated areas and major transit routes, carry out a thorough investigation into the killing, and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

It also urged authorities to engage student bodies and civil society organisations in proactive security planning.

According to NANC, the safety of students must remain a priority, stressing that education cannot flourish in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.

The association reaffirmed its solidarity with Nigerian students and pledged its continued commitment to advocating for peace, safety, and good governance in Kwara State and beyond.
