Kwara monarch freed from captivity after ‘ransom payment’

Oba Simeon Ibiyinka Olaonipekun, the monarch of Aafin Ile Ire in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, has regained his freedom after months in captivity.

The traditional ruler was abducted by suspected bandits in December 2025 alongside his son. His son was later released after a ransom of ₦20 million was reportedly paid, while the monarch remained in the kidnappers’ custody.

It was gathered that Oba Olaonipekun was finally freed on Thursday morning following the payment of an additional ₦12 million to the abductors. The ransom was said to have been raised through contributions from members of the community and private individuals.

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, were unsuccessful as she could not be reached for comment at press time.

The monarch’s release has brought relief and renewed hope to residents of Aafin Ile Ire and neighbouring communities, who have expressed gratitude for his safe return after the prolonged ordeal.
