Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) has disclosed that it will flag-off the activities leading to the conduct of local government elections next month, February 2024.
In a statement on Wednesday, the commission applauded the Kwara State House of Assembly for the passage of new amendments to the law governing the conduct of the local council polls.
“We are excited to receive the news of the passage of the amendments to the law. While the commission looks forward to the signing of the bill any moment from now, we will, in February, announce activities for the conduct of the local government elections.
“We urge all stakeholders to support this process,” the statement said.
Earlier on Tuesday, the State House of Assembly has passed the bill to amend Kwara State Local Government Electoral law on Tuesday.
The House Presided over by Speaker, Hon Yakubu Danladi directed Clerk of the House, Alhaji Abdulkareem Olayiwola Ahmed to forward clean copy of the bill for Governor’s approval.
The amended Kwara State local government electoral law stipulates 360 days notice for conduct of local government elections.
It could be recalled that many stakeholders – individuals, politicians, Civil Society Organizations and others in the state have been calling on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to conduct the local government elections.
The 16 local governments in the state are being run by TIC Chairmen. The TIC Chairmen have been piloting the affairs of the councils for more than 3 years.
However, the passage of the bill is a signal that local government elections will soon be conducted.
