Kwara, Lagos, FCT, 24 other states warned against imminent flooding
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a new flood alert, warning that 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are at significant risk of flooding between Tuesday and August 5.
In a statement released on Monday, NIHSA’s Director General, Mr. Umar Mohammad, indicated that over 739 communities and 162 Local Government Areas are expected to be impacted during this period. “This alert is consistent with our 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) released on April 10,” he noted.
The states identified under the red alert include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe.
NIHSA also warned that the impending flooding could disrupt over 100 major transportation routes, including critical economic corridors such as the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja Road and the Ibi-Wukari Road.
“There is an increased risk of property damage to homes, businesses, and vital infrastructure, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas,” the statement emphasized. “Additionally, agricultural lands are severely threatened, which may lead to food security issues in various regions.”
The agency urged emergency management stakeholders to activate their preparedness and response mechanisms promptly, advising at-risk communities to implement evacuation plans without delay.
NIHSA encourages the public to stay updated through its Flood Dashboard and other official social media channels for ongoing updates and forecasts.
