Kwara govt warns plank dealers to desist from indiscriminate tree falling
The Kwara Government has warned Plank Dealers Association to desist from indiscriminate tree falling to prevent deforestation in the state.
The government also enjoined them to be diligent in discharging their responsibilities to reduce environmental degradation and for the growth and development of the state.
This is contained in a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Mrs Okanlawon Taiwo, on Tuesday in Ilorin.
It stated that the Commissioner for Environment, Mrs Abosede Buraimoh, issued the warning in Ilorin while receiving the state Plank Dealers Association in her office.
Buraimoh stressed the need to work in synergy with the association for smooth working relationship.
She urged the association to play its role effectively in curbing illegal activities, such as indiscriminate tree falling by some of their members and workers in the field.
“Everyone has his or her responsibility to play for the state.
“When you come across any illegality, such as cutting down of trees, the association can challenge such act and bring it to the notice of the ministry.
“This will go along way in curbing the act. So play your own part for the betterment of the state,” Buraimoh urged.
The Director of Forestry, Alhaji Babatunde Mahmud, appreciated the past cooperation and support of the association to the ministry.
Mahmud however urged the association not to relent in their support and assured them of the ministry’s support whenever the need arose.
Responding, Alhaji Muritala Olounoje, the President, Kwara Plank Dealers Association, expressed joy for the hospitality received and promised that they would contribute immensely towards the development and progress of the state. (NAN)
