Kwara govt urges residents to prioritize newly established university
Kwarans have been urged to support the good initiative of the State University of Education, saying establishing the state tertiary institution would strengthen the education sector in the state while also reducing the huge dependency on University Study Centres in Colleges of Education and opening the state to more development strides.
It would be recalled that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, during his second-term inauguration in office, announced the state government’s decision to establish a University of Education, the move which was aimed to address the shortage of human capital in the education sector and also poor enrolment for the National Certificate in Education (NCE) programme.
The state government’s decision comes on the heels of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signing of the Federal Colleges of Education Act 2023 into law, empowering Federal Colleges of Education to run NCE and other related degree programmes concurrently to upgrade their status effectively.
The establishment of the Kwara State University of Education in the state capital is, no doubt, a child of necessity and another laudable vision of Governor AbdulRazaq towards building a prosperous future
However, the state government inaugurated an 11-man Committee led by Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem, a seasoned educationist and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, who studied, planned, and also monitored the implementation and take-off process after the establishment bill had received due legislative attention at the Kwara State House of Assembly.
The Prof. Shuaib AbdulRaheem-led Committee was on a tour assessment of the three state-owned colleges of education in Ilorin, Oro and Lafiagi to evaluate available facilities and human resources for the smooth take-off of the Kwara State University of Education in Ilorin.
The Ministry, however, said the newly established University of Education provide the opportunity for the old teachers to improve their qualifications and improve their career ratings, which will attract enhanced remuneration and a heightened social standing, adding that it will also expand the opportunity for kwarans to secure admission.
It, however, stated that the university, which promised to provide a world-class standard in teaching, learning, and research, as well as entrepreneurial training and character development, would soon commence its activities.
