Kwara govt urges farmers to prepare for thunderstorms ahead of planting season
The Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is urging farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural sector to take precautionary measures in light of the weather outlook issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). The forecast warns of isolated thunderstorms across parts of Kwara State from Sunday through Tuesday.
This advisory comes at a crucial time as many farmers are returning to their farmlands to prepare for the upcoming 2025 planting season, which is set to begin in the first week of May. With weather conditions becoming increasingly unpredictable, the Ministry emphasizes the importance of safety and proper planning.
According to the forecast, thunderstorms may bring strong winds and high temperatures, potentially disrupting farming activities and posing risks to farm infrastructure, livestock, and farmer safety, particularly in open-field settings.
To mitigate these risks, farmers are advised to:
- Avoid working in open fields during stormy periods.
- Secure greenhouses, farm sheds, and irrigation equipment.
- Reinforce crop protection structures such as stakes and trellises.
- Monitor livestock closely and ensure they have adequate shelter.
- Protect harvested produce and feed from moisture during transportation and storage.
The Ministry also warns that the expected high temperatures could lead to heat stress in both humans and animals. Farmers are encouraged to provide shade and clean water for livestock, stay hydrated, and limit strenuous activities during peak sun hours.
Dr. Alabi Afees Abolore, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, has instructed extension officers across all local government areas to enhance awareness efforts in farming communities and provide real-time guidance as the rains approach. He reaffirmed that ensuring the safety of farmers and safeguarding farm investments remains a top priority for the Ministry.
This advisory is part of the Kwara State Government’s ongoing initiative, led by His Excellency Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to promote climate-smart agriculture and support a resilient and productive planting season for farmers throughout the state.
Farmers are encouraged to stay informed through their local extension officers and the Ministry’s official communication channels for further updates as the season progresses.
