Kwara govt to partner EFCC in fight against cyber crime

The Kwara State Government has expressed willingness to partner with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its fight against cybercrimes.

The Kwara State Commissioner for Youth Development, Mrs. Harriet Adenike Afolabi-Oshatimehin, who stated this during a courtesy call to the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Commission on Thursday, said the state government will partner with the commission on sensitisation, seminars, and walks.

She charged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to give the fight against corruption a holistic approach rather than focusing more on students in higher institutions.

Afolabi-Oshatimehin said that it will be better to focus more on preventive measures in curbing cybercrimes than making curative measures a priority as the alarming rate at which cybercrimes increase is quite worrisome and appalling, noting that this is not so good for the image of the state.

She further stressed that the fight against cybercrimes should start from Secondary Schools, saying these are people who eventually gain admission into higher institutions before finally proceeding for National Youth Service.

Earlier, the Zonal Commandant of EFCC, Usman Muktar, stated that cybercrimes are predominant in areas with higher institutions, and to curb this, institutions should devise means by which students dismissed from other institutions on a crime basis could be identified and denied admissions in order to prevent other students from being negatively influenced.

He added that public enlightenment should be carried out from time to time on radio stations as this will help spread faster and to the grassroots.
