Kwara govt seizes unhealthy cow meat, urges butchers to ensure safety
The Kwara State Government has seized cow meat suspected to be unfit for consumption at the Akerebiata Abattoir market in Ilorin.
The move, led by the State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, aims to protect the public from eating unsafe meat.
Mrs. Funke Sokoya, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, explained that ensuring the health and safety of the people is one of the Ministry’s main responsibilities.
She urged the butchers and owners of the seized meat to work with the Ministry’s staff at slaughterhouses across the state to maintain safe standards for public consumption.
She also advised livestock farmers and butchers to consider insuring their livestock to reduce financial risks in the business.
Dr. Abdullateef Salman Olugbon, Director of Veterinary Services, reminded butchers to only slaughter healthy animals for the public.
He assured them of the government’s commitment to offering more training to improve their productivity.
Alhaji Moshood Abdulquadri, Chairman of the Cooperative Harmony Butchers Union, expressed support for the government’s efforts and emphasized the union’s dedication to ensuring safe meat reaches consumers.
He also called for assistance in providing insurance for their assets.
