Kwara govt reacts to dispute at Yikpata camp, assures corps members of safety

The Kwara State Government has assured the corps members serving in the state of safety and adequate welfare.

The government was reacting to the controversy surrounding the alleged victimisation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members at the Yikpata Orientation Camp, which has since been amicably resolved following a swift intervention by the State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

It would be recalled that tensions had earlier mounted at the camp following a report that some corps members, who are largely Muslims, were subjected to unfair treatment, sparking concerns among stakeholders and the general public, with complaints ranging from excessive disciplinary actions to alleged harassment by camp officials.

The governor, who was represented by the Chairman, NYSC Governing Board and the State Commissioner for Youth Development, Amb. Ndanusa Usman Shehu reassured the public that measures have been put in place to prevent future occurrences, emphasizing the state government’s dedication to protecting corps members’ rights and ensuring they are all well treated and enjoy harmony in the State.

“We recognise your vital role in national development, and I want to assure you that your welfare is a top priority for this government. No corps member should suffer any form of harassment or victimisation while serving the nation”, the Governor said.

The NYSC State Coordinator, who was also represented by the Camp Director, Mrs Babatunde Funmilayo, emphasised the importance of adhering to the NYSC’s prescribed dress code during the orientation programme and assured of NYSC’s dedication to protecting the rights of corps members.

She reiterated that the consistent reminders underscored the NYSC’s commitment to maintaining discipline and decorum among corps members, stressing that adhering to the dress code reflects the values and standards upheld by the NYSC.

Some of the affected corps members expressed relief over the resolution, saying that “we appreciate the intervention of the authorities, and it gives us confidence that the system works.”
