Kwara govt prioritizes students’ engagement in agriculture for food security

In a bold move towards enhancing food security and empowering the younger generation, the Kwara State Government is ramping up its agricultural initiatives. This effort, guided by the vision of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, aims to integrate students into the agricultural sector, equipping them with essential skills and resources.

During a recent visit from the Senior Special Assistant on Student Affairs, Hon. Wasiu Onidugbe, Commissioner Dr. Afees Abolore Alabi reiterated the government’s commitment to this cause. The discussions around integrating students into the state’s agricultural development agenda highlight a strategic focus on boosting food production and expanding economic opportunities.

This initiative is part of the Kwara Next Generation Farmers program, nested within the Kwara State Agricultural Transformation Plan’s value chain pillar. The primary objective is to cultivate a new generation of agripreneurs, thereby strengthening the agricultural value chain in the state.

Dr. Abolore expressed that the Ministry would take systematic steps to ensure students gain practical agricultural skills, promoting self-sufficiency before graduation. A key aspect of this strategy includes the introduction of cluster farming, providing students with hands-on experience. A reward system will also be introduced to encourage hard work and commitment.

“Our youths are the future of agriculture in Kwara. By engaging them early, we are securing food production and creating viable career paths in the sector,” emphasized Dr. Abolore.

Hon. Wasiu Onidugbe congratulated Dr. Abolore on his new role and praised his forward-thinking approach to prioritizing youth engagement in agriculture. He pledged full support for the initiative, highlighting the necessity of structured training programs to ensure its success.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s ongoing policies aim to uplift communities, creating a sustainable legacy that promotes food security and economic growth. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development remains dedicated to fostering sustainable agricultural practices while generating economic opportunities for the youth and students of Kwara State.
