Kwara govt pledges support to artisans to boost electrical sector standards

The Kwara State Government, through the Ministry of Energy, has demonstrated its commitment to partnering with local artisans to enhance the quality of goods and services available to residents while establishing a comprehensive database of electrical sector practitioners.

This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Energy, Engr. AbdulAzeez Kola AbdulGaniy, who was represented by Permanent Secretary Mr. Olaitan Afolabi during a follow-up meeting with stakeholders in the artisan community at the Ministry’s Conference Room.

Afolabi highlighted the necessity of proper registration and regulation for electrical artisans. “We aim to promote professionalism and ensure safety and quality in service delivery. This initiative aligns with the Kwara State Artisan Registration Law of 2010, empowering our Ministry to register and regulate key electrical professionals,” he stated.

He emphasized that this includes a range of roles, such as electricians, electrical technicians, and repair specialists for electronic devices.

Reflecting on previous engagements, he noted, “You may recall that we held an initial meeting with key players in the electrical sector in January 2025. Today’s engagement is a continuation of that process … to protect the lives and property of Kwarans.”

Engr. Nurudeen Alao, Chairman of the Kwara State Artisan Registration Committee, encouraged artisans to comply with registration requirements fully. “Certificates of registration will be issued upon completion of payment and necessary documentation,” he explained.

He also stressed that the certification is essential not just as a legal obligation but as a pathway to professional recognition and government opportunities.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to ongoing engagement with artisans and called on all stakeholders to back the initiative for the greater good of the industry and the public.

During the meeting, Abdullahi AbdulRazaq, Desk Officer at the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, stressed the importance of making payments directly through the KWIRS account for accountability reasons.

The event was attended by various local leaders, including Mr. Lateef Araoye, CEO of A.O Multipurpose Ltd; Umejesi Romester, from the Kwara Igbo Traders Association; Elder Osasona, Vice Chairman of the Licensed Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN); and several other prominent figures in the artisan market.
