Kwara govt expresses worry over influx of Okada riders in Ilorin

The Kwara state Commissioner for Works, Engr Suleiman Rotimi, on Thursday, raised the alarm over the influx of operators of commercial bikes popularly known as Okada in the state capital.

A release quoting the commissioner and signed by the ministry’s press secretary, Mansurat Amuda-Kannike, states that he enlightened the joint Okada Riders Unions on the need to beef up security amongst their members, during a meeting with the union leaders at the ministry’s conference hall.

Rotimi is quoted to have emphasized that the registered Okada Riders Unions in the state, which include NATIONAL, ROAD, HERITAGE, CHAMPION, AWARENESS, HAPPINESS and COMMERCIAL, would be issued identification cards with barcode, new single uniforms and stickers to enhance easy identification and planning.

He added that censor of Okada Riders would be conducted to ascertained the population of registered operators as part of the strategies to improve security.

He also stressed the need for payment of tax urging the riders to discuss a realistic amount and mode of collection.

He further assured them of government readiness to collaborate with financial institutions to facilitate social investment scheme, in form of loan, that will further boost transport businesses in the state.
