Kwara govt declares Tuesday public holiday to mark Islamic new year
The Kwara State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.
The declaration follows the commencement of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar, which begins on Tuesday.
Announcing the holiday in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, the state government called on Muslims to reflect on the significance of the Hijrah and its enduring lessons for humanity.
The government said the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah remains a symbol of tolerance, peaceful coexistence and the right of individuals to pursue their legitimate aspirations without infringing on the rights of others.
“Hijrah reminds the world of the evergreen value of tolerance, common humanity, and the right of every person to their legitimate aspirations, either in matters of faith or mundane matters as long as they do not hurt others,” the statement said.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq also extended his greetings to Muslims in the state and beyond on the occasion of the new Islamic year.
According to the statement, the governor prayed for peace, unity and prosperity in the state and across the country.
“As we commemorate the new Hijrah Year, His Excellency Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq prays that God bless every home, restore peace to our land, and give us the strength to do right by every person,” the statement added.
