Kwara Govt condemns attacks on teachers, promises enhanced school safety measures

In a strong condemnation of the rising attacks on teachers, the Kwara State Government described the trend as “very disturbing” and wholly unacceptable for any society that values education.

The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, expressed concern over the increasing violence often inflicted by students on teachers who are simply trying to enforce discipline in accordance with established codes of conduct.

“These attacks are not just alarming, but also they are an assault on the very foundation of our educational system,” Olohungbebe stated. “When we attack teachers, we attack the future.”

His statements come in response to a recent incident where a teacher was assaulted by two siblings within school grounds.

In light of this occurrence, a disciplinary panel has been established to investigate the incident and recommend appropriate actions.

Olohungbebe made it clear that any assault on teachers, under any circumstances, will not go unpunished.

The Commissioner also highlighted the role of some parents, accusing them of complicity in such incidents by either encouraging bad behavior or shielding their children from accountability, while warning that anyone found responsible would face the full force of the law, irrespective of their social status.

Olohungbebe, however, reaffirmed government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of educators across the state, stating, “Teachers must feel safe and supported in their duty to mold future generations. The government is taking this matter seriously and will deploy all necessary measures to ensure their protection.”
