Kwara govt calls for citizens’ sensitisation to end water crisis
A call has been made to relevant authorities, especially the federal government, in sensitising water users and consumers to end the water crisis in the country.
Hon. Usman Yunusa Lade, the Kwara State Commissioner for Water Resources, made the call at this year’s World River’s commemoration day with the theme: “The Incredible Natural, Cultural and Recreational Values of Rivers and Streams in our Society”, held at the premises of the State Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, Basin Lakeside, Ilorin.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Christiana Omolola Asonibare, stated that water plays critical roles in recreational and cultural values in our communities, as it is a source of life that must be jealously protected from being contaminated by human, industrial, and animals’ activities, which are damaging to human lives.
According to him, “As we know that water is the source of life, which God gives to us as a natural value, it needs to be taken good care of to avoid the prevalence of waterborne diseases that threaten our livelihoods.”
Lade lamented that the reoccurring issue of flooding is one of Nigeria’s most pressing water-related challenges that is affecting millions of people’s homes and farmlands while appealing to the major stakeholders, well-meaning individuals and corporate organisations to help pull resources together to assist in this direction, noting that the government alone can not do it.
The Commissioner also called for prudent and diligent promotion of sustainable water usage and management.
