Kwara Fire Service urges traders to install fire detection systems after Ita-Amodu inferno
The Kwara State Fire Service has urged traders and business owners to install fire detection and suppression systems at their premises following a fire outbreak that destroyed shops at Ita-Amodu, Niger Junction, Ilorin.
The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, made the call on Monday when he visited the scene of the fire incident to sympathise with affected traders and assess the aftermath.
Muhammed expressed concern over the losses suffered by the shop owners and assured them of the Fire Service’s continued commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
He used the visit to educate traders and residents on the need for proactive fire safety measures, particularly for businesses dealing in highly combustible materials.
The chief fire officer specifically advised business owners to invest in fixed fire protection installations and automated fire detection and suppression systems capable of detecting and responding to fires even when occupants are not around.
He said such systems could significantly reduce the impact of fire outbreaks and prevent minor incidents from escalating into major disasters.
The Oke-Aluko/Ita-Amodu community commended officers and personnel of the Kwara State Fire Service for their response to the incident, saying the firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading and causing further destruction.
The Fire Service said the visit was part of its efforts to combine emergency response with public education and proactive fire prevention.
It urged business owners and residents to prioritise fire safety and ensure that their premises are equipped with appropriate equipment to respond to emergencies before they occur.
