Kwara contingents shine at 8th National Youth Games opening ceremony in Asaba
Kwara State contingents made a strong impression during the match-past at the opening ceremony of the ongoing 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State today, 12th of September 2024.
The athletes, dressed in vibrant yellow and green attires symbolizing the state’s colors, marched in unison, showcasing their pride and readiness to compete in various sporting events.
The National Youth Games, an annual event aimed at discovering and nurturing young talents, kicked off with a colorful opening ceremony at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, on Saturday.
Kwara contingents to the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, comprising 144 athletes, 25 coaches and 61 officials.
The athletes will compete in 24 sports events, which are athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, chess, cricket, cycling, darts, deaf athletics, fives, golf, judo, karate, para-athletics, para-table tennis and rugby.
Others are scrabble, squash, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and taekwondo.
Kwara State officials have expressed confidence in their athletes, hoping to improve on their previous performances in the games. Last year, Kwara finished with several medals, and this year, they are optimistic about securing even more honors.
Speaking at the event, Kwara’s Director of Sports, Coach Ibrahim Bako, praised the athletes for their discipline and dedication during training and urged them to compete with the spirit of sportsmanship. “We are here to make Kwara proud, and I believe our athletes will give their best performances in every category,” he said.
The 8th National Youth Games will run for a week, with over 30 states in attendance, aiming to foster national unity and talent development among Nigerian youth.
