Kwara Assembly moves to combat illegal cooperative societies
The Kwara State House of Assembly has announced a strong initiative to combat the operations of illegal and unregistered cooperative societies within the state. This decision follows a motion titled “Need To Curb The Illegal Activities of Unregistered Cooperative Societies in Kwara State,” which was put forward by Hon. Odetundun Olushola (Irepodun) and seconded by Hon. Maryam Yusuf Aladi (Ilorin South).
In the resolution adopted, the Assembly urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to instruct the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology to begin the urgent identification of all unregistered cooperative societies and enforce compliance with registration requirements. The lawmakers highlighted that failure to register should lead to the closure of these societies and legal action against their operators.
The Assembly also called for a review of the existing registration process to make it simpler and more transparent, encouraging cooperative societies to comply voluntarily.
Moreover, the legislators requested the governor to direct the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology to collaborate with the Ministry of Communication to launch a statewide public sensitization campaign. This initiative aims to inform citizens about the importance of engaging solely with registered cooperative societies and the potential risks associated with unregistered ones.
Additionally, the Assembly appealed for the Ministry of Communication to work with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) to monitor radio stations in the state, ensuring that only legitimate financial institutions and cooperative societies are promoted in their broadcasts.
