Kwara APC denies zoning governorship ticket to Kwara north ahead of 2027

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State, Sunday Fagbemi, has said the party has not zoned the party’s 2027 gubernatorial ticket to Kwara North ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fagbemi stated this while speaking on a radio programme monitored by our correspondent late Friday, amid rising agitations for power shift to Kwara North Senatorial District.

When he was asked to confirm whether the party had zoned the gubernatorial ticket to Kwara North as being widely claimed, he explained that no such thing had been made on it, noting that such matters fall under the jurisdiction of the party’s national leadership.

“If there will be any zoning, the national executive of the party will give the directive. But as of now, nothing of such is on the offing. We have not even discussed it because we don’t have the schedule decided yet. Anyone who has interest to vie for any position has the right to do so,” he said.

Fagbemi added that even if the Kwara chapter of the party reaches a decision on zoning, it would still require ratification from the national secretariat.

“Even if we decide in Kwara that this is what we want, it is still subject to approval from the national secretariat,” the party chairman emphasised.

The debate over zoning continues to dominate political discourse in the state as the ruling APC prepares for another electoral cycle.

Stakeholders from different parts of the state, especially Kwara North and South have been agitating for the ticket to be zoned to their district. On the other hand, a group, the One Kwara Agenda is insisting that political parties should focus more on competence and unity as the basis for zoning the ticket.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq will be rounding off his second and final term in office as the state also heads into the 2027 general elections.

His administration, which began in 2019, has spanned two consecutive tenures and will be constitutionally ending in 2027.

Political activities and succession dynamics are expected to heighten as Kwara prepares to elect a new governor alongside national and state legislative representatives.
