Kwara 2027: NDC guber candidate, Ajia calls for unity as party exco takes over new secretariat

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally taken over its new Kwara State Secretariat at 187 Lagos Road, Ilorin, with the party’s governorship candidate, Prof. Abdulmumin Olayinka Ajia, urging members to unite ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking at the handover ceremony on Monday, September 28, 2026, Ajia said the secretariat was being handed over to the state executive committee led by Alhaji AbdulGaniyu AbdulSalam to strengthen the effective administration and coordination of the party in the state.

He said the decision had the backing of the party’s deputy governorship candidate and its candidates across the state, including the Kwara Central Senatorial candidate, Dr. AbdulRasheed Suleiman Omoda, and the Kwara South Senatorial candidate, Ambassador Samuel Omoniyi Oni.

According to Ajia, the development should bring an end to disagreements over leadership within the Kwara NDC, stressing that there was “no victor and no vanquished” in the resolution.

He urged members who had taken different positions during the disagreements to rally behind AbdulSalam and the state executive committee, while encouraging the party to resolve future differences through its established organs.

“As candidates of this great party, we will do all we can to support the state executives and every other organ of the NDC,” he said.

The governorship candidate said unity within the party was crucial to achieving its objective of presenting an alternative to Kwarans in the 2027 elections, warning that internal divisions and personal interests should not undermine the party’s broader goals.

Ajia also highlighted the NDC’s “Forward Kwara Agenda, Itesiwaju Kwara”, which he said was anchored on building a safer, more productive and prosperous state.

He listed improved security, quality education, accessible healthcare, better roads and public transportation, as well as economic opportunities for farmers, traders, workers and young entrepreneurs among the priorities of the agenda.

He said achieving these objectives would require disciplined leadership, responsible budgeting and a government that listens to citizens and delivers on its promises.

Ajia further called on residents who are not members of the NDC to join the party, describing it as a “progressive and democratic family” where citizens could contribute ideas towards the development of the state.

He congratulated AbdulSalam and the state executive members on the handover, urging them to use the secretariat to unite members and strengthen the party ahead of the tasks before it.

“Public office is a trust, and a political party is strongest when it remembers whom it exists to serve,” Ajia said, urging members to remain united and accountable to the people of Kwara State.
