Kwara: 15-year-old kill aunt who raised him after failed poison attempt

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 15-year-old boy, Gobri Yusuf, for allegedly killing his aunt who had adopted and raised him in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adekimi Ojo, disclosed the incident on Friday during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Ilorin.

According to the police commissioner, the suspect was arrested following a distress report about the discovery of a woman, identified as Akanbi A., lying in a pool of blood inside her residence.

Ojo said the report was received on January 14, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m., prompting police operatives to immediately respond and launch an investigation.

Preliminary findings revealed that the suspect, who was living with the deceased, allegedly hid behind a door and attacked her while she was bathing using household items.

The police recovered several items believed to have been used during the attack, including a frying pan, a weighing scale, a kitchen turning stick and kitchen knives.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime, telling investigators that the act was driven by resentment towards the deceased.

The commissioner added that the suspect also admitted he had previously attempted to poison the victim, but those attempts were unsuccessful.

After allegedly carrying out the attack, the teenager reportedly changed his clothes and left the house under the guise of running an errand.

He later contacted the deceased’s husband, who subsequently returned home and discovered her lifeless body.

CP Ojo said the suspect remains in police custody while investigations into the incident continue.
