Kogi INEC office under threat? SDP cries foul, APC fires back
In a dramatic turn of events, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has sounded an alarm, alleging a sinister plot to set fire to the Kogi State Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Lokoja.
However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council swiftly responded, flipping the narrative and holding SDP accountable if any untoward incident occurs at the INEC office.
Isaiah Davies Ijele, the Director General, New Media, Muri/Sam Campaign Council of the SDP, expressed concerns in a weekend statement, suggesting that certain individuals affiliated with the APC were orchestrating plans to burn down the building housing crucial materials from the last gubernatorial election. Adding that the alleged motive, as per the SDP, is to erase all traces of rigging evidence.
“It has come to our notice via grapevine that there is an urgent need for security to be beefed around the Kogi State INEC office in order to avert the sinister plot to burn down the office by mandate bandits,” Ijele stated.
He added that the SDP is urgently calling on security forces to step in and prevent the alleged arson attempt while securing all election materials used in the recent gubernatorial election.
The party explicitly stated that should anything happen to the sensitive materials the court has ordered it to inspect, the APC-led government must be held accountable.
In a sharp retort, Kingsley Fanwo, the Director of Media and Publicity/Spokesman for the APC Campaign Council, dismissed the SDP’s claims as baseless propaganda.
Fanwo accused the SDP of attempting to create a diversion, contending that the party’s alarm was a ploy to conceal its own alleged plan to burn down the INEC office and shift the blame to the APC.
The APC, not taking these accusations lightly, called on security agencies to bolster security measures around INEC offices across the state to thwart any moves by the opposition party.
