Kebbi proposes death penalty for bandits informants amid escalating insecurity

In a decisive response to the rising tide of armed banditry, Kebbi State Governor Nasiru Idris has announced plans to introduce the death penalty or life imprisonment for individuals convicted of being informants to criminals.

This was made known during the governor’s visits to Tadurga village and Kyebu in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Areas, where a series of bandit attacks led to the tragic loss of 30 lives.

Governor Idris emphasized the gravity of the situation, calling informants “deadly to society.” He conveyed his administration’s unwavering commitment to addressing insecurity, stating, “We are here to see things for ourselves, commiserate with you, and reassure you of the urgent steps we have taken to improve security.”

To enhance security, the governor detailed plans for establishing a military operational base in the Zuru Emirate and announced the deployment of Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and other critical security resources from Abuja to Kebbi.

Expressing condolences to the victims’ families, Governor Idris prayed for their souls, asking Allah to grant them Aljannah Firdausi and wishing a speedy recovery for those injured in the attacks, while highlighting significant investments in security, including the acquisition of 80 Hilux vehicles for law enforcement and 1,500 motorcycles for local vigilante groups.

He urged residents to refrain from politicizing issues related to security and to avoid spreading unverified information on social media, warning that such actions could impede ongoing efforts to restore peace.

Local leaders, including the Chief of Danko, Ibrahim Al’aji, and the Chief of Dabai, Suleiman Sami, thanked the governor for his prompt intervention and called for increased security measures along routes commonly used by bandits entering from neighboring states. The Emir of Zuru, Rtd. Major General Sani Sami, also expressed appreciation for the governor’s commitment to security in the emirate.
