Kano govt reunites beggars with families, to prosecute persistent beggars
The Kano State Government has reunited over 800 beggars with their family across the 44 local governments in the state.
This was disclosed by the Commander-general of Kano Hisbah Board, Harun Ibn Sina on Friday at a press briefing in KANO.
The Hisbah head said the beggars which comprises 536 females and 279 males were indigenes of Kano state, adding that they were evacuated from the street for violating the ban on street begging in the state metropolis.
The Kano state government earlier in February 2020 placed a ban on street begging across the state.
While handing over the beggars to their family, Ibn Sina warned that any one of them who returned to the street for begging would be prosecuted for going against the ban.
He said beggars from neighboring state were handed over to their relatives with the support of their state government, while others are receiving care from the board.
“Among those who were evacuate was an old woman with a large sum of money. Most of the beggars evacuated were from major high way, under-bridge markets, railways and other public spaces”. He said
The Hisbah head expressed concern about how some beggars are allegedly involved in criminal activities and how underage persons are involved in drug abuse.
He however urged parents and guardians to support the efforts of the state in eradicating street begging by ensuring proper guidance and monitoring of their children.
