Intensify campaign against fake drugs – Kwara govt tells NAFDAC

Kwara State Government has charged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to intensify its efforts at addressing issues of fake and substandard drugs and food to enhance the healthy living of the people.

Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, the State Commissioner for Health, made this known on Monday while receiving the State Coordinator of the Agency in her office.

El-Imam, while lamenting the activities of some of the quacks making false claims, urged them to ensure compliance with standards to checkmate the activities of herbal producers in order not to endanger people’s health.

She also stressed further that the Agency should beam its searchlight on quacks who misled public members with the advertisement of their herbal products, “as Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is very much committed to delivering quality healthcare services to the state.

She further assured that the Government is ready to collaborate with the agency to enable it to carry out its statutory duties as expected.

“The present administration in the state is ready to reactivate the state Taskforce Committee on drugs to checkmate the problem of fake and substandard drugs and food.” She added.

In his remarks, the State Coordinator of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Pharm. Nadabo Nathan said the visit was mainly to familiarise the agency with the ministry to fashion out a way of collaborating with the government to curb the menace of quacks across the state.

The coordinator, therefore, appealed to the government to reactivate a State Taskforce on Drugs to assist and ease the agency’s job.

In another development, the Commissioner today, Monday, February 3rd, 2025, received the leadership of the Association of Resident Doctors, Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), chapter, in her office.

The newly elected executive members led by its President, Dr Abdulfatai Abdulazeez, paidfamiliarisationer a familiarisation visit in anticipation of a harmonious working relationship between the Ministry and the Association.
