In response to the ongoing security challenges it faces, the Zamfara State Government has implemented immediate measures to address the issue of cattle rustling and insecurity within the region.
The Commissioner of Information and Culture, Mannir Mu’azu Haidara, issued a statement on Sunday, announcing the temporary closure of select cattle markets (Kara) in five local government areas (LGAs) of the state.
The affected cattle markets include Danjibga and Kunchin Kalgo in Tsafe LGA, Bagega and Wuya cattle market in Anka LGA, Dangulbi and Dansadau in Maru LGA, Dauran in Zurmi LGA, and Nasarawar Burkullu in Bukkuyim LGA.
These closures were prompted by the rampant activities of suspected armed bandits who have been involved in the sale and transportation of rustled cattle.
The decision to temporarily suspend operations at these cattle markets was reached during a meeting of the State Security Council held last Thursday.
The council urged security agencies and the Directorate of Animal Health and Livestock Development to rigorously enforce these measures.
Furthermore, the council pledged its unwavering commitment to closely monitor and assess the situation, with the ultimate goal of restoring peace and security in the affected cattle market areas.
This proactive approach aims to not only address immediate security concerns but also protect the livelihoods of livestock owners and traders in the region.
