INEC notifies suspended Senator Natasha of recall process by constituents, sets for exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially informed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, about a recall petition submitted by her constituents. This notification marks a significant step in the recall process initiated by registered voters in her district.

In a letter dated March 26, signed by INEC Secretary Mrs. Rose Oriaran Anthony, the Commission stated that the notification is in accordance with Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The letter confirmed the receipt of the petition seeking to recall her from the Senate.

Mrs. Anthony noted, “This notification is in line with the provision of Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall, 2024.” Additionally, the letter was distributed to the presiding officer of the Senate and published on INEC’s official website.

In an update regarding the recall exercise, INEC indicated that the petitioners’ representatives, who presented the petition and accompanying signatures a few days ago, have now submitted their contact details as per the regulations.

The next step involves the Commission scrutinizing the list of signatories to verify that the petition is supported by more than half (over 50%) of the registered voters in the constituency. This process is expected to take place in the coming days, with the results set to be made public.

INEC has reassured the public that the entire process will maintain transparency, stating, “We once again reassure Nigerians that the process will be open and transparent,” according to a statement from Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
