INEC launches CVR sensitisation, says over 500,000 Nigerians pre-register in 5 days

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that more than 505,906 Nigerians have completed their online pre-registration for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise within just five days of its commencement.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, shared this significant milestone on Friday, August 22, 2025, during the official launch of nationwide sensitization activities for the CVR in Abuja. He was represented by National Commissioner Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu.

“This impressive turnout is a testament to the eagerness of Nigerians to participate in the democratic process,” Yakubu stated. “As of midnight on Thursday, August 22, over 505,906 citizens have pre-registered since the portal opened five days ago. This reflects a strong belief in our democracy and the Commission’s efforts to enhance the electoral process.”

The online pre-registration phase began on Monday, August 18, 2025, and will transition to a physical registration phase starting on Monday, August 25, 2025. During this phase, citizens who have pre-registered online, along with first-time registrants, can complete their registration at local government and state offices of INEC, where their biometrics will be collected.

To encourage civic engagement, INEC launched a colorful sensitization campaign, highlighting the importance of voter registration as a vital step towards impactful participation in elections. The campaign featured a lively roadshow organized by the Voter Education and Publicity Department, engaging with communities from the INEC Headquarters through popular locations like Banex Plaza and Wuse Market.

Yakubu urged all eligible citizens, particularly young Nigerians and those recently turning 18, to take part in the registration process, stating, “Your Permanent Voter Card (PVC) is key to making your voice heard.” He also called on political parties, civil society organizations, and the media to work together with INEC to raise awareness about the registration initiative.

The CVR exercise will be held in 811 centers nationwide, including all 774 Local Government and State offices, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Citizens can access a dedicated online portal to pre-register, confirm their PVC status, locate registration centers, transfer registrations, request replacements for lost or damaged PVCs, and correct personal information.

INEC has assured that special arrangements will be made to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities and vulnerable groups. Professor Yakubu emphasized the shared responsibility of all citizens in the voter registration process, calling for collective support for a more inclusive democracy.
