Indian Prime Minister Modi promises to support Nigeria’s flood victims with 20 tonnes of relief materials
…as President Tinubu confers GCON title on PM
Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister, has promised that India would provide 20 tonnes of relief materials to victims of recent flood incidents that ravaged parts of Nigeria, saying his donation is to support the effort of Tinubu’s administration in addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by the floods.
According to TheCable, Modi pledged on Sunday after he was conferred with Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) – the second highest title in Nigeria.
It would be recalled that scores of Nigerians were displaced by floods this year. In September, many residents in Maiduguri, Borno’s capital, fled their homes after the Alau Dam collapsed.
The same dam collapsed 30 years ago.
Meanwhile, on April 17, 2024, the federal government said 148 LGAs in 31 states, including Borno, were at risk of severe flooding between April and November 2024.
Modi’s visit is the first by an Indian prime minister since Manmohan Singh’s state visit in 2007.
The prime minister’s visit seeks to deepen ties between India and Africa’s most populous country.
“Both leaders will exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to enhance collaboration in critical sectors,” a statement by the presidency said on Saturday.
